Friday Fondness: Festive Balloons

Quite a while ago I posted about my love {obsession} with balloons, I'm not sure what it is about them, but they always indicate festivities and happiness. With my birthday coming up this weekend, we're having a small soiree and I'm tempted to try some DIY balloons, these seem like they'd be simple stunners. Happy weekend!

Do You Treat Yourself?

I used to hear someone say "I just gave myself a little gift" or "I treated myself to this necklace" - at first I thought it was insanely selfish and almost self righteous, but the more I grow up the more I recognize the beauty of it. Doing something special for yourself is a lovely way to realize and reward yourself for the hard work that you do in fact do! I decided recently to treat myself to my first ever massage {and I'm glad I did!}. Not only was the massage simply to-die-for, but the act of giving myself something special was really divine, I felt pampered, rejuvenated, and free.

What kinds of things do you do to treat yourself?

The Weekend in Short - June Gloom

{Much needed color combo inspiration via a tank top display}
After this weekend it is quite evident that the weather does not care one bit that summer has officially begun! The June gloom continues its nasty long streak of humid weather, grey skies, and over all disgusting quality. But dreariness aside, we spent the weekend surrounded by summer colors and flavors with lots of shopping and a stop at the local farmer's market!

Friday Fondness: Summer Has Arrived

Woohoo! Today is the first day of summer, and even though it's been rainy and glum here I'm glad to say hello to warmer weather, sun bathing, iced lemonade, and big floppy sun hats! This time last year I was soaking up the sun in Florida and enjoying fresh seafood. Hoping you all have a summery weekend in store!

Panko Crusted Fish Tacos

The June gloom {which I secretly love} has finally passed, or so it seems. With a beautiful summer evening last night, I decided it was the perfect time to try out a fresh new recipe that was light but also full of flavor. These fish tacos made for a perfect dinner, and we surprisingly very simple to make!

Friday Fondness: Dip Dye Furniture

Sure, it's a bit of a fad, but it's a pretty one to get on board with. Dip dye furniture {or color blocked} is a super easy way to individualize, refine, and give some extra style to any piece of furniture. In my personal opinion it looks best when done on smaller framed pieces, so dining chairs, legs of tables, stools, etc {anything that isn't super clunky and block-like already}

This photo is a great example of three chairs that have interpreted the fad in three ways. With upholstered furniture, just paint the wooden legs at the bottom a subtle color so as to give it the right 'weightiness' something too bold could make it look unbalanced. With the chair, both are are visually light enough to pull of bold colors. Notice though that when the majority of the chair is painted they stuck to a lighter more subtle hue - and the chair with just a segment of the legs painted has a really vibrant yellow. This is perfect example of balancing the visual weight with color and space.

And if you want a SUPER easy project, just spray paint some wooden stumps and call it art / furniture.

The Giant Mechanical Man

If you're not already obsessed with Chris Messina, The Giant Mechanical Man is sure to spur your interests. The buzz about the film started quite a few months ago...but like always, I'm a little behind the times and just yesterday amongst a rain storm did I decide to hunker down and finally watch it. The movie is touching, creative, and so realistic that you can't help falling in love with every moment. Tim Tucker {Chris Messina}, a street performer, and Janice {Jenna Fischer} are both thirty-somethings who like most of us, are still trying to figure out everything out. I can honestly say I haven't enjoyed watching a movie as much as I did this one in a very long time. A beautiful film about finding love, figuring out life, and the magic of just one person.

Father's Day Gifts

Father's Day is right around the corner, and if your pop is anything like mine he's quite possibly the most difficult person to buy for! Men are so confusing. But I've learned over the few years that they like the essentials...and occasionally an air guitar.
What dad doesn't revel in the act of being the 'grill master'? Make sure he's prepared for chef stardom with these grill rubs. ($27.95)

They may try to hide it, but men pamper just as much as we do. Give him the best of the best with a Kiehl's Starter Kit. (42.00)

The 80's head banger in him will love this air guitar app and pick....just make sure he keeps it at home.

And of course...a food guide to one of his favorite cities. Sarah and I actually got him this book this year since he visits us in Minneapolis and St. Paul so often. He's a food lover and always looking for a great new place to eat. ($13.45)

The Weekend in Short - Rainy Days

For the past three or four weeks we've experienced a pretty continuous streak of rainy weather, and this weekend of course followed suit. I decided with the dreary weather to whip up a dinner that was both full of flavor and comforting, so I went with a grilled brie and turkey panini with a home-made apricot cranberry chutney. Needless to say it was delicious and was the perfect way to spend a cold night in. My mom and I have also been working our way through Arrested Development; is any one else re-obsessed? Yesterday was one of my best friend's 19th birthday - oddly enough even with a total of a seven year age difference, for three weeks this month he, his brother, Sarah and I are all teenagers - so we had to snap a picture.

Friday Fondness - Bursting with Blossoms

I may not be an english major like Sarah, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy my share of poetry now and again. Recently a friend of mine sent me this poem {how sweet?} and with the constantly dreary we've been having, this poem has been so beautiful to read in anticipation of the blooms of summer. Enjoy!

Bursting with Blossoms

The peachtree is bursting with blossoms.
Some will ripen as fruit.
The peach blossoms shine bright in rose colors
through the blue sky and the passing clouds.

Ideas too break open like buds of blossoms,
at least a hundred every day-
Let them unfold and roam as the wish!
Don't ask for rewards!

There must be time for play and innocence in life
and room for boundless blossoms.
The world would otherwise be too small
and our life not a delight.

This beautiful abstract decorative rubber stamp set would be great to give someone who likes scrapbooking, gift-wrapping, and crafting! $11.95

Crystal Bullet Pendants

How gorgeous are these crystal bullet necklaces? I'd love to pair these with a strappy tank, boyfriend jeans, and a big floppy sun hat. They're made of Pyrite, Amethyst, and Quartz by MYRRH in Los Angeles, CA. Wouldn't they make a perfect gift?

The Weekend in Short - Taste of the Valley

{Our dahlias are finally blooming and beautiful!}

This weekend, much like last, went by in a blur! We kicked it off with a retirement party for a close family friend and wrapped it up with our annual food binge at Eau Claire's Taste of the Valley. In between there was movie watching, strolls through downtown and afternoon walks in a nearby nature walking path. I'm still reveling over the cheese curds and crab rangoon from the weekend, oh and of course our homemade steak kabobs! Needless to say it was a wonderful weekend spent with family and friends...and of course a more than generous amount of food!
