An Afternoon Date

I'm terrible at making plans - when someone {especially Alex} tells me to figure out what we're doing for a date or just any day in general I freeze. Well it turns out that living in Minneapolis has taught me how to make plans, and good ones at that. Alex is coming for the weekend and I've got the perfect date...

An afternoon date! Dinner dates can end up feeling really fancy, so I like to keep it casual by going during the day. There's a great neighborhood in Minneapolis that's really artsy and full of amazing spots to eat. Start the day by hitting up a new coffee shop {or stick your tried and true favorite}. Next stop: the museum. Museums are great places to spend a day, they're quite, full of stuff to look at, and are still intimate - my favorite is the MIA. After gazing at artwork grab lunch at a nearby cafe and finish with a sweet dessert!

Do You Take Technology Vacations?

I was talking with Sarah the other day - but we weren't really talking to each other. We were in the same room, batting comments back and forth, but no real conversation was taking place. The television was on, we were both on our laptops, and our iPhones were right where we could see them - in our hands. I love all of my gadgets, and many times I wish I had more {Kindles, iPads, etc.} - but quite often I find myself being more concerned about staying updated with my twitter followers, what's happening on Instagram, and compulsively checking my email - it's almost a job in itself.

I use my iPhone for pretty much everything: calendars, to-do lists, contacts, emails, news, and so much more; I don't know what I'd do without it! However I've realized I don't need it all the time {brunch with family, during my break at work, etc} - which makes me very intrigued in a recent fad called 'technology fasts'.

Have you ever taken a technology fast or a 'vacation' away from all of your gadgets?

CREATE: Bridal Shower Party Favor Rings

Sarah, my mom, and I just hosted a bridal shower for one of our best friends - and while we had the majority of it planned to a T, we realized we didn't have any party favors. Becca is a candy fiend, so we decided to make everyone their own 'candy engagement rings'. They're easy to put together and are a pretty treats to display and hand out!

All you need is a bag of ring pops {we decided to go with all strawberry, but you could choose a variety}, small confection bags, and ribbon to tie them off.

Unwrap the ring pops from their original packaging, place in individual clear bags, and tie off with curled colored ribbon. We used lavender to match the colors of the wedding. And there you have it - dazzling candy rings that you can wear {and enjoy} all day!

The Weekend in Short - A Bridal Shower

This past weekend went by in a flash. Before a busy weekend, we stopped at my favorite new coffee shop - and then it began. Friday night was filled with preparations with cooking, baking, cleaning and of course decorating {we made our own ceiling hung pom-poms} while Saturday was a day of celebration, sweet treats, and of course lots of wedding talk. This next week will definitely be spend doing some catch-up; but it was all worth it.

Hoping you all had a wonderful weekend! I'm curious, how did you spend this unusually nice weather?

Friday Fondness - Pattern Play

In the last investigations post, I mentioned the importance of mixing different colors, textures, and patterns. This rule is great to keep in mind for everything from gift wrapping to your personal style. I love mixing patterns, especially in rooms. I'm working on a project right now dedicated to the mixture of all three - but I'm emphasizing how you can mix different styles, scales, and textural patterns to create a cohesive and personalized style.

Have fun pattern mixing this weekend!

A Day at the Museum

As an art history minor naturally I have developed a love of art, but I've always enjoyed wandering around museums. Luckily for me, Minneapolis is filled with amazing art museums, my favorite being the MIA {Minneapolis Institute for the Arts}. The other day I headed over for a quick stop at the MIA to view the museum's private collection of prints {otherwise known as the art work that is too sensitive to light to put on public display} - my favorite was the print below by James Gillray {it's hand colored}. I got done a little earlier than expected so I ran around the museum like a maniac to quick take a peek at all my favorite exhibits {did you know the MIA is 1 of 4 museums to house a Doryphoros?} After enjoying some art, a friend and I stopped at Spyhouse Coffee, an amazing coffee shop, my lavender honey mocha was easily the best coffee I've had in a while.

investigations | a modern girl's sitting room

It's been a while since we've had an investigations post {thank you valentine season}. This week we're looking at the modern girls version of a sitting room. Sitting room sounds so uptight, like parlor room, or museum. This living room is very girly {which is right up my alley} but it has a simple, sleek, and graphic quality that gives this room that combination of romance and sophistication - let's break it down:

Large Scale Artwork: It seems every living room I look at recently has had 'collections' or artwork walls. You know what I'm talking about; a wall filled with tons of different sizes and types of artwork {either in a grid or randomized pattern} but this room is reminiscent of a classic sitting room by using one large painting. It's classic and makes a simple statement.

Colorful Furniture: Remember your grandma's living room? If it was anything like my grandmother's it consisted of one color {dusty blue} for every single piece of furniture - the chair, rug, couch, etc. Keep it young and fresh by mixing it up - be it different hues, textures, patterns or all three! This room uses the same fabric {velvet} in different hues and saturations - which keeps the room feeling luxurious, classic, and romantic. You can always use mis-matched textures, just make sure it's not too much.

Graphic Rug: Since the furniture is the same material there needed to be something to jazz it up, so this graphic rug adds both texture and pattern. It ties in perfectly with the armchair by using navy blue {which is a perfect 'color' neutral}.

Lovely Lights

Don't you just love these lights strung on the bed frame? I think it gives the room an automatic mood - very ethereal and romantic.

What's Your Favorite Valentine's Date?

Valentine's Day always seems so romantic, even if you're not doing something special, I always feel little bit more lovey-dovey. Since Alex and I live in different cities we haven't spent the last two Valentine's Days together, but we have had some pretty good ones in the past. For our first Valentine's day Alex took me skiing {which I was very opposed to, but ended up loving}. Our second Valentine's day was our senior year, and I ended up having a band concert that night; but Alex came to the concert and took me to dinner at Perkins {our high school cheap date place}.

Now that we don't have the convenience of living in the same city, we have taken up the tradition of a Valentine's Day email. It doesn't sound very romantic but it sure is fun, while Alex usually goes the more romantic route, I opt for sending him an email filled with the silliest valentines I can find around the internet - I guess we both know the way to each other's heart ;)

What are your favorite Valentine's Day traditions and memories?

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! I hope you all have a very sweet day with lots of chocolate and flowers {I love a bouquet of dahlias}.  I'm spending my Valentine's day at class and then going home to watch The Office and snack on some chocolates with Sarah, and of course I'll be wearing something pink!

How are you going to spend your Valentine's Day?

Valentine Pretzels

I've been in love with these sweet and salty treats since I was just a little girl, and these Valentine's day inspired ones remind me of how my mom used to dip pretzel sticks in almond bark and pink sprinkles for a special Valentine's day treat! What I love about these though is that they actually look kind of like hearts! They're super easy to make too, just find your desired pretzels {even though I love fun flavors I recommend an original salt}, cover in almond bark or chocolate and ten dip into your festive sprinkles.

Sweet, salty, and super fun!

Heart{y} Waffles

Breakfast in bed is such a wonderful treat for birthdays, surprises, and especially Valentine's Day, it's kind of like at-home room service! These heart shaped waffles are adorable {and would be cute year round} - I think I'd made chocolate chip waffles :)

Plus, they're super easy to make with this waffle iron {and it's really affordable!}

Stained Glass Project

we've been studying proportion systems in my interior design class recently, you know, math stuff like the golden mean, fibonacci sequence...pretty much just making sure stuff looks pleasing. we're doing a logo design as well as stained glass - which i love. the design has to be inspired by frank lloyd wright's stained glass designs, so it has a lot of rectangular forms and geometric sequences.

i've been really interested in what color scheme i'm going to use, so i've been looking around pinterest for some stained glass color combo ideas. the glass house above is gorgeous, just like the wall of windows - i love the way the light floods through them!

i've been using this color scheme website to find some good combos - i want to make a big impact but also be soothing when light flood in.

these are the two i'm leaning towards...pretty similar but still just different enough - i think i might end up going with the second. what do you think?

The Weekend in Short - Snow Day

This weekend I went home to visit my parents, celebrate a birthday, try on bridesmaid dresses, and turns out...get snowed in. It was actually really nice to have a reason to extend my weekend - even though the weather was terrible. We got put together some party favors for an upcoming wedding shower, made a chocolate peanut butter cake, and baked an early Valentine's Day cake for our mom {it's chocolate buttermilk with coconut and coffee}.

Do You Send Out Valentines?

I loved getting Valentine's Day cards when I was in elementary school, I still get a Valentine's Day package in the mail from my mom, and I try to give something to Alex. Who doesn't love getting a little note and a treat from someone just because? And sending them is just as fun. As an adult though it seems that it's way less common - hardly anyone I know participates in the tradition. I love finding cute cards {or even making my own}, writing a cute little note, and stuffing it with a treat!

Do you send valentines to your friends or is it cliche as an adult?

Friday Fondness - Four Gifts for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is filled with heart shaped confections and flowers {which let's face it, over here at Classic Kitsch we love} but sometimes it's just nice to get a gift that's not themey....that's why I've got my top four Valentine's Day gifts that she'll love and you won't feel in your checkbook.

Maybe these gorgeous gem earrings {they're as pretty on the eyes as they are on your budget}

This candle smells amazing and is equally as attractive

It may be cold, but she'll need a pair of perfect shades for the upcoming spring

What's Your 'Perfect Date'?

It seems there's a lot of pressure to have the perfect story-book Valentine's Day, doesn't it? Almost everywhere you go these days the amount of marketing for it is overwhelming, from the vast arrays of chocolates, flirty lingerie, and jewelry to things such as ice cube trays!

But hey, who doesn't love to spend a day feeling lovey-dovey and romantic? Which brings up dating... With all that pressure, how do you possibly measure up to 'long walks on the beach' and romantic dinners for two in a secluded corner of a french bistro?

I personally like the idea of a casual dates year round, but for Valentine's Day it can be fun to dress up a little! My perfect date includes some yummy chocolate, dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory, and of course this polka dot dress :)

What's your perfect date?

Love{ly} Nails

As you all know I'm always looking for new hues to cover my nails in - and I'm always excited when i find a great color combination for the holidays. I love the look of an accent nail in either a glitter or a similar hue. These baby pink and watermelon nails are the perfect combination of girlish charm and flirtatiousness. I think I'll have to break this out for a Valentine's Date, what do you think?

Nutella + Pancakes

Did you know today was BOTH National Nutella day AND Pancake day?! Two amazingly delicious foods to celebrate on one day - these apple cider pancakes look amazing! Here are some mouth watering recipes that I love.

Have you ever had a Dutch Baby pancake? My room mate makes them and swears they're amazing. {She adds fresh strawberries and homemade whipped cream}

Nutella doughnuts are a must - I think they'd be a great breakfast snack on the go.

Just a few weeks ago I made my own home-made pizza. I'm pretty curious as to how this Nutella Pizza would taste!

Need a Compliment?

Do you ever have those days where no matter what you just feel bad? Well have no fear! The other day I ran across this awesome website that literally tells you a compliment to brighten your day - and the best part is, if you don't feel better after the first one, you can get a bunch more {with super bright backgrounds included ;)

I love this one, because let's face it, we all have done it.

French Comfort

Are you have a comfy night in for Valentine's Day? Sometimes those are the best! I would definitely wear this cute pullover for a night of romantic comedies and take out Chinese food.

The Weekend in Short - Still Life

This last weekend was very cold, albeit slightly warmer than the 20 below we had earlier in the week, but still mighty cold. With my drawing class this semester, I've been working on a lot of still life sketches; I usually do them at the studio where there are more props, but this time I did it at home and had to use what we had...even dead flowers. However, we decided to try to give the apartment some warmth with some fresh baked chocolate cookies and new flowers.

Hoping you all had a wonderfully warm weekend!

What Do You Love?

I am so excited to have another Month of Love! So we're starting it off with a pretty general topic : what do you love? I have a pretty weird list of things I love...

Blankets seem like kind of an old ladyish thing to love, but I don't care because deep down in all of us there's a Betty White version of ourselves that loves piling tons of blankets on. And you all know it. And you all love it as much as I do.

Only Alexa Chung could make taking a bath look so model-esque and perfect. Perhaps that's because she is model-esque and perfect...but that's a whole other soap box to get on. Speaking of soap boxes, bubble baths one of the most relaxing things, they warm you up, make you smell amazing, and are a great way to end both good and bad days! Some people are disgusted by them because they think they are just sitting in a pool of their own filth - if your'e that filthy then you should be worrying about other things.

Chocolate is my go to snack, I love it! But deep down when it comes to ice cream I've secretly been having an affair with strawberry (gasp) - I know, I'm an ice cream slut. But there is something so exciting about fresh strawberries and frozen dairy.

What do you love these days?
